african literature (and by that i mean: very small number of african authors im reading here) tends to be much less verbose and complicated than american literature (and by that i mean: i know next to nothing about literature and am just asserting things based on small samples)
however, in reading "the river between" by ngui wa thiong'o, i was struck by how simple, almost childish the writing and themes were. not wanting to judge alternative cultural styles harshly, i pressed on.
until after 75 pages or so, i turned to the front cover.
it was an elementary school edition.
