trip day 1

- new favorite snack in kenya -- 50 bob for a bag of kenyan chips (60 cents?), 50 more for an avacado ==> extremely messy chips and guacamole (smash up the avacado in the skin) that make the 8 hour bus rides almost bearable

- as a side note, for a country with so few paved roads, north-western kenya has by far the most speedbumps of any place i have ever known. the back of the bus is not the place to be.

- visited a wildlife reserve in lema -- apparently about 80% of funds to reservations go towards development projects for sorrounding locals so they have a vested interest in preserving the wildlife (though i wonder if people woudl keep donating if they knew their money was going to water projects rather than lions and giraffes) -- saw more giraffes, zebras, elephants etc. saw some other ngos that are probably of not much interest to folks

- not a single kenyan i have talked to (which is a suprisingly large number -- i know a little swahili now and almost everyone in kenya knows at least broken english, so i get to make at least 4-5 friends every bus stop) has responded to the question of "what is your biggest development concern" differently: easier access to clean water is without a doubt the most important issue in most of sub-saharan africa. which stinks, becuase its not the sort of thing that easy to rally the public around
